Paul Harvey's News and Comment

Paul Harvey has long been known for his News and Comment segments. He came up with the concept in 1951 and under various forms used it until his death in 2009.

In later years, he had two versions of News & Comment - the 5 minute Morning News and the 15 minute Noon News.

Noon News

The Noon News & Comment was a 15 minute segment that usually aired after the ABC News and local news segments and a series of local and national commercials from Monday through Saturday. Saturday's broadbast was a recap of the previous week's top news stories, recorded on the previous day (Friday).

Typically this was aired from 12:06 PM until 12:21 PM (following the ABC news, local news, and commercials). In later years with stations that carried satellite fed programming (Rush Limbuagh and others), this could have aired as early as 11:45 AM and ran until the 12 noon news.

There were lots of fill-in hosts. This was a "cast of thousands" but in later years there was Fred Thompson, Doug Limerick, Gil Gross and Ron Chapman. Gross (morning) and Limerick (afternoons) were named Harvey's eventual successors, but three weeks after Harvey's death, the entire News and Comment franchise was canceled.

(Webmaster's guess - ABC/Citadel had already sold ad time for the Noon News & Comment. When that had been "used up", ABC/Citadel didn't want to continue on. Either they felt that Gil Gross wasn't having the ratings they needed, or they wanted to give it to Mike Huckabee's show (did anyone actually carry it??) or they just wanted to kill the segment because it didn't fit in with the current role of the company with full program blocks.)

The last Noon News that Paul did was February 16, 2009. After that and until his death less than two weeks later, Ron Chapman filled in as host.

Gil Gross News & Comment

"I'm Gil Gross and I have some stories to tell you."

ABC News/Citadel attempted to continue on the News and Comment franchise with Gil Gross as the morning and noon time host. This only lasted a couple of weeks. I only manged to get about a week's worth from the Paul Havey website.
